Domingos Joanes was a portuguese knight who lived in the early 13th century.
He´s represented in full armour, ready to war. The shield shows the family herald,originally blue and silver with golden fleur-de-lis.
The original sculpture is from the 14th century and can be found next to the mortuary chapel of Domingos Joanes and his wife, in the church of Oliveira do Hospital. It promotes military values, having simultaneously a religious dimension, typical from the medieval spirituality.
A second statue is in exibithion in the Museu Machado de Castro in Coimbra.
The artist was Mestre Pero, originally from the kingdom of Aragon and the official sculpture of the Queen Saint Isabel, wife of King D. Dinis of Portugal.
